This collection documents commerce, architecture, transportation, and industry in Newark, N.J. and the surrounding area during the early twentieth century. It consists of over 9,000 glass plate negatives (11x14, 8x10. 5x7, 4x5), film based negatives, and slides. In addition, there are several ledgers relating to Cone's business. The collection consists of six major subject areas intellectually divided into series which include: transportation, architecture, commercial enterprises, industry, institutions and people, and the American Car and Foundry Co. (Wilmington, DE). The transportation series includes images of railroads, automobiles, horse-drawn carriages, and marine vessels. There are also negatives resulting from Cone's work for the Lehigh Valley Railroad (LVRR, 1910-1940s), railroad stations, yards, docks, and the Morris Canal. The architecture series consists of images of architectural plans, interior and exteriors of houses, and construction sites. The commercial enterprises series consists of views of street scenes, retail businesses in Newark and Essex County, banks, insurance companies, dairies, and department stores. Also included are images of store window displays (1910-1930) advertising products such as tools, asbestos, medicine, clothing, food, and hygiene items. Towns represented in the collection include Newark, South Orange, West Orange, Montclair, Bloomfield, Jersey City and elsewhere in New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, and Delaware.
